some things I've been thinking about

June 23rd, 2011
Can we take a more therapeutic approach to language learning? My son needs to work on his social skills. Turn taking, greeting people, asking questions to get the information he wants. All this would be perfect in the language classroom. Surely there is some research out there about special needs and learning a second language? Lalou

time to change blog format?

June 17th, 2011
So, is it time to change what I do on this blog and where we are going? I think so. And I've been inspired by having a look at some craft blogs and some housework blogs. I like the 'How to' approach. So I think I will be putting on more pictures and different things to attract more readers to the site. Stay tuned... Lalou

Excursion etiquette

June 10th, 2011
And my son is so ready too. I accompanied his kinder class on an excursion this week to the Botanic Gardens. It was a wonderful day out. It was a beautiful autumn morning and the trees in the Gardens were just magnificent- in all their red and golden splendour. I had charge of two boys and my own son; so three in total. My son was OK at the start, but as the excursion wore on, it became increasingly obvious that he couldn't cope with me taking care of the other two as well as him. He lagged behind the others and hunched his shoulders over. He had trouble participating in activities and would suddenly rush up to the kinder teacher and take her hand and look round and stare at me pointedly. It was, as his kinder teacher admitted to me later, 'A side of M that I haven't seen before.' But even though he was tricky, I'm glad that I went on that excursion. (even though in the middle of it, I began wondering if it was really such a good idea) It has now given me something to start talking about with his teachers. The idea that we might come up with some strategies that will help my son socialise with his peers is just a boon.
